The Choli

choli Here is my very own pattern for a choli. It is made in stretch panne velvet, is very cheap to make and it is very comfortable to wear. Best of all... it takes just an hour or so to sew and costs less than $10.00!

This particular pattern evolved over 6 months or so. It seemed like each time I made a choli... I thought of another way to improve it a little! *smile*. I think that I have finally arrived at a version that is fairly quick and simple to make, and fits well.

choli Please note that this pattern will only work well for stretch panne velvet or similar. Other fabrics, including 2-way stretch lycra, Spandex, or non-stretch wovens may not work at all well with this pattern.

If you are not familiar with panne velvet, it is a one-way stretch fabric. Meaning, it stretches sideways ONLY. There is no vertical stretch to it. As a guide, 4" (10 cm) will comfortably stretch out to 6" (15 cm). It looks like crushed velvet and comes in a fabulous array of jewel toned colours.

Because this choli is made with stretch panne velvet, and because you can tie the bands looser or tighter as you wish, it may comfortably fit a range of sizes. I suggest that you make a sample choli with this pattern, and then "tweak" it if necessary to fit yourself better.

It can be awkward when you try on your choli for the first time. It sort of slips and slides about and can be hard to put on. Here's a a few simple tips to put it on and tie it nicely... How to put on your Choli.

And now to get to the pattern! I expect that you will want to print the pattern and instructions out, so I have made special pages for you to do that. Cream writing on a black background (like this page) just does not print at all well! So, your pattern and instructions will be in black text on white pages.

From Pia in Germany

"This morning I made a choli by using Your pattern and instructions. I was so easy! Your instructions are very clear. I can see how much thought you put into their order. I am a little frightend by online-sewing-instructions due to bad experiences, but today was a wonderful relief from that.

Thank you very much! Have a nice day & greeting from Germany."

From Amy in U.S.A.

"What a wonderful choli pattern! I have limited sewing experience and whipped it up in a just a few hours.

The instructions were clear, concise, and so easy to follow. The choli itself was a perfect fit the first time I tried it on (that rarely happens to me with tops). I also had just enough fabric left over to make a matching belt and headband, so I made an entire ensemble for $1.99 (panne was on sale at Jo-Ann's last weekend).

Now I can't wait to hit the fabric store and make several more in different colors.

Thank you."
